Putting the Kabosh on Yarn Buying
Posted by gloriana under Stash Enhancement, Upcoming knitting projectsAs I’ve noted before, there’s lots of discussion of stash in the blog world, and folks are often imposing Yarn Non-Buying Agreements on themselves. And this month, I’m joining their ranks. Not because my stash is unreasonably huge, but because, well, I just don’t need to buy any yarn right now. I’ve recently bought a bunch:

And I’ve got enough to knit six upcoming projects:
1. Dashing fingerless gloves from Knitty - 1 skein brown/blue Malabrigo Merino (top left in the photo) - for a Christmas gift.
2. Fetching fingerless gloves from Knitty - 1 skein burgundy Malabrigo Merino (top right) - also for a Christmas gift.
3. Springtime in Paris shrug from Runway Knits - 10 balls charcoal gray Rowan Cashsoft DK (bottom left).
4. Starsky from Knitty - 5 skeins off-white Cascade 220 (bottom right).
5. Twisted Flower socks - 2 skeins Louet Gems Pearl.
6. Whitby socks from Knitting on the Road - 2 skeins Louet Gems Opal.
And that’s without counting the two skeins of Socks That Rock in the “Titania” colorway that I haven’t assigned to patterns yet. Plus there’s my WIPs - the Pewter Coat being the most time-intensive. So I think I’ve got enough to last me for the next month without buying yarn. In fact, it would be great if I could just not buy yarn until after Christmas… but we know how long that will last. The only other projects I’m seriously contemplating knitting this fall are Eunny Jang’s Endpaper mitts, and a pair of new gloves. But otherwise I’m set for sweater, sock, and gift knitting projects.
That doesn’t mean I haven’t been buying patterns: most recently, Zephyr’s new Juliet cardi and the new Stitch Diva Trapeze jacket. Both very cute, and both quite tempting. Hopefully I’ll be able to hold out until the new year…

You are one disciplined knitter, lady! I’m definitely going to advocate Endpapers–they’re a great project, and you don’t have to buy very much yarn at all to do them.
I’ve been loving the sewing lately, btw–I’ve been swamped with beginning-of-semester stuff and houseguests so I’ve gotten behind on commenting. I’m totally jealous of all that gorgeous Liberty fabric!

Starsky uses bulky-weight yarn doesn’t it? Are you planning to size down with gauge? I love my Starsky!

I recommend the Endpapers, they are such a fast, fun project that make you feel really smart and skilled. Love all your projects, such discipline!

What does the front of Springtime in Paris look like? I’m having a hard time visualizing it based on the graphic.

I just totally bought both of those patterns. SO CUTE. You are an evil temptress. Well, not really. You are a linker of cute patterns.
Good luck with putting the kabosh on the yarn. You can do it!

I’m looking forward to seeing your interpretation of Starsky. Oh, thanks for the recommendation re: Bend-the-Rules Sewing. I ordered it and am eager for it to arrive. I may take up sewing thanks to you! :)

While I appreciate your ability to keep the stash low, there is just something entirely too satisfying for me to stop stashing away. Mostly, I can’t really control myself in the face of sock yarn. But then, socks are quick and not terribly expensive. I’m excited to see how that Cookie A pattern turns out.

I am in those ranks too (as I hang my head after a few “false starts”) as I am planning to really focus on stash for a long while. You have some lovely projects queued - I love the Runway Knits shrug. I am planning some Dashing mitts too… they seem so cozy.
Cheers~

What a great queue! And, oh, Malabrigo…

You’ve picked some cute ones! Nice knitting list.

Yes, Starsky is finding it’s way back onto my radar. Unfortunately, it has two pair of socks, 1 set of handwarmers, a bt’s doily lapblanket and autumn rose ahead of it. Sigh….

You have a great list!!

I’m attempting “knit from your stash” just now, since my stash is taking over my house. Sadly, I keep finding reasons to start new projects (knitalongs, presents, what-have-you) and then I can’t locate the yarn I *know* I own…!

Love the yarn! Defiantly make the endpaper mitts, so cute! That’s a really good idea to knit from your stash…I also spin so my stash expands…

Not kabosh but kibosh

Sorry the editor comes out.

Oh it is so hard not to buy yarn. I’ll be thinking of you!

Well, I didn’t think I’d like the Juliet sweater for myself, though I think it will suit you wonderfully! But now I’m thinking that if I used big needles and a laceweight mohair blend, I might get away with it.
Thank you for making me think outside my comfort zone.

[...] something substantial to show. And now I need to confess something. Remember how I said I was on a yarn diet? Well, I fell off that wagon. Yeah, already. I was in Austin for less than 24 hours last weekend, [...]
